The Nihongland Den — Just Words, And Yet Not Just Words
Hi, I'm Seiko, the creator of The Nihongland Den.
Today, I’d like to share a little bit about the heart behind this brand — and why I chose this name.
I’ve been working as an English conversation tutor for a little over six years — a job I started back in Japan and brought with me to the UK.
Living here, I often feel like I’m standing in the space between Japan and the UK.
In that space, I began to notice both small “gaps” — and, at times, surprising similarities.
And then one day, I thought:
“What if I could gently build a bridge between those spaces?”
That’s how The Nihongland Den began.
The Meaning Behind the Name
Nihongland is a word I created by blending Nihon (Japan) and England.
I wanted a name that reflects the landscape found between the two.
Not a “halfway” point — but a place where two worlds can softly meet and connect.
Den is an English word that means “nest” or “hideaway.”
A quiet, warm, safe place.
That’s the kind of space I hope this becomes.
A Brand That Feels Like a Place
The Nihongland Den isn’t just a product brand.
I believe there’s quiet value in things that bloom gently.
Even if a voice isn’t loud, those who live “in between” often carry more strength and intention than we realize.
Whether you love language, love design, or feel like you're somewhere in between —
I hope this becomes a place where your creativity can quietly bloom.
Words That Carry Meaning
The words featured in my designs aren’t chosen just because they look nice.
Each phrase holds meaning, intention, and a small story.
And most importantly — they’re all designed to be spoken out loud.
You can read them.
You can understand them.
You can say them.
And when you say them, they become yours.
When someone speaks a word with confidence,
that’s when its true meaning begins to shine.
Words Can Be Strange — and Fun
You’ve probably seen some quirky or funny Japanese on T-shirts abroad.
Honestly? I think that’s one way to enjoy culture, too.
I wore strange English T-shirts when I was younger (I’m sure many of us did!).
But The Nihongland Den offers a different kind of wordplay.
Words you can read.
Words you understand.
Words you can say — with just a bit of care and intention.
And words that carry a little meaning with them.
You don’t need to say them perfectly.
Even if the words come out a little awkwardly —
if they make you feel something, if they resonate with your heart,
then they’re already your words.
What Comes Next
Going forward, I hope to expand beyond just notebooks and T-shirts —
into items that naturally fit into everyday life.
Maybe a small Japanese worksheet tucked into a gift.
Maybe something that quietly carries the spirit of kotodama — the soul of words.
I want to follow what moves my heart.
And I hope the people who visit this space can do the same.
Together, we can keep nurturing this little hideaway —
a place where imagination and creativity quietly bloom.
One Last Thing
I’ve learned that a single word can change a life.
It can be a wall.
It can be a bridge.
Sometimes, a single phrase can stay with someone forever.
And when you speak it — not just wear it —
that’s when it truly means something.

The Nihongland Den ― たかが言葉、されど言葉
こんにちは、The Nihongland Den 代表の Seiko です。
今日はこのブランドに込めた想いと、“なぜこの名前にしたのか”を、少しだけ話させてください。
私は英会話講師として、もう6年ちょっと活動しています。
この仕事は日本で始めましたが、ありがたい事に今もここイギリスで続けることができています。
イギリスで暮らすようになってから、
「日本とイギリスのあいだ」に立っているような感覚を、よく感じるようになりました。
その“あいだ”で、いろんな“ズレ”や、逆に“共通点”を感じることもあります。
でも、ある時ふと思ったんです。
「だったら、その“あいだ”を、そっと繋いでみようかな」って。
それが、The Nihongland Den を始めたきっかけです。
名前に込めた意味
Nihongland は、Nihon（日本）と England（イングランド）を組み合わせた造語です。
日本とイギリス、その“あいだ”にある景色を表す名前にしたいと思いました。
「中途半端な場所」じゃなくて、「そっと橋をかける場所」にしたかったんです。
Den は、“巣”や“隠れ家”という意味の英語。
静かで、あたたかくて、安心できる場所。
そんな空間になれたら嬉しいなと思っています。
“場所”を届けたい
The Nihongland Den は、ただのプロダクトブランドではありません。
私は「静かに咲くもの」にも価値があると信じています。
たとえ声が大きくなくても、“あいだ”にいる人の声には、想像以上に力や強い思いが宿っていると思うんです。
言葉が好きな人も、デザインが好きな人も、
そのどちらにもぴったり当てはまらない人も。
ここが、誰かの創造性がそっと咲く場所になれば、すごく嬉しいです。
言葉には、ちゃんと意味がある
私のデザインに登場する言葉たちは、
ただ見た目がよさそうだから選んだわけではありません。
ひとつひとつに、意味や想い、ストーリーがあります。
そしてすべて、「声に出して読める」ことにこだわって作っています。
読める。
意味がわかる。
声に出せる。
そして、それが「自分の言葉」になる。
誰かがその言葉を、自信をもって口にしてくれるとき、
そこに“本当の意味”が宿ると信じています。
言葉って、不思議で面白い
海外で見かけるTシャツには、ちょっと変わった日本語が使われていることもあります。
でも私は、それもひとつの文化の楽しみ方だと思っています。
私自身、学生時代に意味不明な英語のTシャツを着ていたこともありますし（笑）、
きっと同じような経験のある人も多いんじゃないでしょうか。
でも、The Nihongland Den が届けたいのは、また違った“言葉の遊び方”。
読めて、意味がわかって、
声に出してもちゃんと伝わる言葉。
そしてそこに、“想い”があること。
うまく言えなくたっていい。
意味を感じて、心に響いたなら、
それはもう、あなたの言葉です。
これからも、心にふれるものを
これから The Nihongland Den では、
ノートやTシャツだけじゃなく、
もっと日常の中に自然になじむアイテムを増やしていきたいと思っています。
たとえば、ギフトに添えられるような小さな日本語ワークシート。
日々の暮らしの中で、ふと心をくすぐるような、“ことだま”を感じるものたち。
心が動いたときに、自然に手に取れるような言葉を、少しずつ拾い上げながら。
作り手である私自身も、訪れてくれる人たちも、
それぞれの想像力とクリエイティビティがふわりと咲くような——
そんな「隠れ家」を、これからも育てていきたいと思っています。
最後に。
言葉ひとつで、人生が変わることがある。
これまでの人生の中で、私はそう学んできました。
壁にもなるし、橋にもなる。
誰かのひと言が、心に深く深く刻まれることもあります。
そして——
声にすることで、言葉はきっと“意味”をもつ。
たかが言葉。されど言葉。
